Empowering Wrestlers: Three Essential Mindfulness Practices for Lifelong Success
A guide to self awareness, stress mitigation, and a growth mindset.
This can be used with any team, organization, or individual. Whether you’re a coach, leader, or parent.
Self-Awareness: The Gift That Keeps Giving
Self-awareness is a priceless gift, especially for high school students and college students navigating the challenges of 'young adulthood". Imagine the impact of instilling this quality in young athletes, not just for their performance on the mat but for a lifetime off it. My favorite tool for fostering self-awareness is the "Signal Lights" tool. Encourage athletes to analyze their body language, self-talk, and focus in various mental states. By understanding how thoughts influence their being, how being influences their actions, and how actions impact performance, athletes can gain valuable insights that extend far beyond Saturday tournaments.
Breathwork Protocol: Simplicity is Key
Introducing a breathwork protocol doesn't have to be complicated. The "Triangle Hold Reset" is my go-to technique for calming the mind. Remind athletes that simplicity is powerful. When they slow down their breath, the mind naturally follows suit. This straightforward practice can be a game-changer, helping athletes maintain focus and composure in high-pressure situations.
Reflection Practice: Celebrating Growth Over Wins and Losses
A simple yet effective reflection practice involves asking athletes to identify three ways they've improved from the previous week. It's not about counting wins or losses; it's about recognizing and celebrating effort and overcoming obstacles. This practice instills a growth mindset, emphasizing a growth and gain mindset. What will benefit your athletes more in the long run—learning another takedown or cultivating self-awareness, adopting stress-mitigation techniques, and embracing gratitude through reflection? Dedicate time each week to this reflective process.
Nurturing the holistic development of high school athletes goes beyond technical skills on the mat. By incorporating practices like self-awareness, breathwork, and reflection, coaches can empower young individuals with tools that extend far beyond their athletic careers.
